Congratulations!
You just landed your dream job at a new record label called “World Beat” that specializes in World Music. Your job is to discover new up and coming talent from South Africa for your label. World Beat is looking for a new group to record and promote. The label has received several leads but still haven’t found the right one.

Your task is to choose a musical group to represent, research their musical style and history, and present your artist to the company president.

You need to research your group and create a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation for your boss, convincing the president to sign them!

 Task

· Research your musical group of choice

· Create a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation

· Present your presentation to the “president” (teacher) of your record label as well as your co-workers (classmates). You WILL BE CHALLENGED on your choice and you should be able to back up your decision to promote this artist. Why will they succeed?

Process

1. You will choose one classmate to be your co-worker.

2. Choose the musical group that you will present to your company. They must be from Southern Africa.

3. With your partner, you will begin to research your musical group using the specific websites given below (See Resources).

In order to make an informed presentation be sure to include reference to the music itself by using the Elements of Music listed below to analyze the music of your performer.

Find and make the cultural connection or purpose of the music. Every form of music has a purpose. What purpose did the music from Africa have?

        a. Elements of Music (you will need to use these to describe the artists music) - Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Form, Dynamics, Texture, Timbre (the instruments used), and Tempo

        b. Musical genre and history behind the music - it’s connection to DANCE (Does this have any cultural context?),

        c. The band / musician’s history.

        d. Take note on any other important or interesting information, as this will allow your presentation to be unique.

5. When your information is gathered, begin to work on your PowerPoint or Keynote presentation. See specific requirements below.

Lastly, you will have 10 minutes to present your group to the record company. Include all elements above, and music clips.

You WILL BE CHALLENGED by the director of the board on your choice. You should be able to support your choice of artist and be able to articulate why they will be successful in today’s music industry.
